LED lighting: all about quality marks

Why certifications are important
Quality marks are not a luxury, but a guarantee that your LED lighting meets European laws and regulations. They ensure that the lamp:
- Is safe for use on public roads.
- Is clearly visible to other road users.
- Does not cause interference in other electronic systems of the vehicle.
Without the correct quality mark, a lamp often cannot be used on public roads. In addition, the absence of a quality mark can lead to fines or rejection during inspections.
The most common quality marks for LED lighting
- E-mark (ECE)
The E-mark (also called ECE approval) is used for vehicle lighting and indicates that the lamp complies with European ECE regulations. The regulations are drawn up by the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and contain technical requirements that are applied worldwide.
- R10-mark
The R10-mark stands for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Lamps that have this quality mark are tested for causing interference in other vehicle systems, such as on-board computers, navigation or radio. It is also checked that the lamp itself is not susceptible to interference from outside.
- R65-mark
The R65-mark applies to warning lights, such as flashing lights and beacons. Lamps are tested for visibility, light intensity and flash frequency. In some countries (e.g. Belgium and France) R65 lighting is mandatory; in other countries it is recommended, but not mandatory (e.g. UK).
- R48-regulation
The R48 regulation sets requirements for the installation and adjustment of vehicle lighting. The aim is to ensure optimum lighting that does not dazzle other road users and improves the driver’s vision.
- ECE R23 – Reversing lights
Reversing lights are tested according to ECE R23 to ensure that they are bright enough for safe reversing, but not so bright that other road users are dazzled.
- ECE R149 – Headlights and high beam headlights
Headlights and high beam headlights must comply with ECE R149 (formerly R112). This prevents oncoming traffic from being blinded, while the driver’s vision remains optimal.
Practical tips for choosing LED lighting
When choosing LED lighting for your vehicle, it is important to pay attention to the following points:
- Check the quality mark: Make sure that the lamp has the correct quality mark for your application (for example E-mark, R10, R65).
- Pay attention to the mounting: The lamp must be mounted in the correct place and height according to the R48 regulation.
- Choose the right color: Use the correct color lighting for the application (for example white for headlights, red for rear lights).
- Check the compatibility: Make sure that the lamp is compatible with other electronic systems in the vehicle.
