ECE mark on your lamp: do you need a certificate?

Have you installed LED lighting and is the inspector asking for proof of the ECE mark during the inspection? We get questions about this regularly. Fortunately, it’s usually simpler than you think.

With approved vehicle lighting, the ECE marking is on the lamp itself. Depending on the product, you can find it on the glass, the lens, or the housing, for example. In this blog, we briefly explain where you can find the marking and what you can do if it’s requested during an inspection.

Where can you find the ECE mark?

Look at the lamp for the E-marking and the corresponding approval number. This marking is part of the product’s approval and is intended to identify the lamp’s approval.

Therefore, when installing, you might want to take a clear photo of the marking. That way, you’ll have the details easily at hand later.

Curious about what the different ECE markings mean? Then read our explanation of the ECE regulations.

What should you look out for?

CheckWhat do you check?
ECE markingIs the approval marking on the lamp?
Approval numberIs the number next to the marking visible and legible?
InstallationIs the lamp mounted correctly and securely?
ApplicationIs the lamp being used for what it was approved for?
PlacementIs the lighting in the right place on the vehicle?

Which ECE marking is on my headlight (spotlight)?

With spotlights and headlights, you might come across ECE R112 or ECE R113, for example. This designation refers to the ECE regulations under which the lamp is approved.

ECE regulationsApplication
ECE R112Spotlights and asymmetrical low beam
ECE R113Symmetrical low beam and high beam

You can find the relevant marking on the lamp itself. So you don’t have to look for a separate document to see which regulations the lamp is approved under.

Do I need a separate certificate?

In many cases, no. The ECE marking on the lamp itself is the official approval mark of the product. This marking is on the lamp and can be checked during an inspection.

We cannot provide a separate ECE certificate. The technical documentation and type-approval documents belong to the manufacturer and are not included as a separate certificate by All Day Led.

The inspector is asking for proof anyway

It can happen that additional information is requested during an inspection. In that case, first show the ECE marking on the lamp.

If you can’t figure it out or don’t know exactly what the marking on your lamp means, send us a clear photo of the mark. We’ll be happy to take a look with you.

Please note: an ECE approval doesn’t automatically mean that a lamp may be used on public roads in every situation. The installation, placement, and application of the lighting also play a role.

What can you do yourself?

Want to go to the inspection well-prepared? Then a few simple checks are enough:

This way, you can easily show which marking is present on the lamp during an inspection.

Summary

You can recognize an ECE-approved lamp by the ECE marking on the lamp itself. We cannot provide a separate ECE certificate; the corresponding technical documentation belongs to the manufacturer.
