Choosing an LED headlight for your tractor
Do you regularly work with a tractor or agricultural machine in the dark? Then good lighting is indispensable. LED headlights provide a lot of light, consume little energy, and are suitable for intensive use.
Yet, not every LED headlight is the same. What should you look for when choosing lighting for your tractor or agricultural machine?
What should you look for?
Start with the function of the lamp. An LED headlight is intended to illuminate the road ahead of the vehicle, while a work light primarily illuminates the work area around the machine. If you use the tractor on public roads, specific requirements for the lighting also apply.
In addition, the beam pattern, lumen output, voltage, and protection against dust and water are important. Do you often work in winter? Then a heated lens can also be a major advantage.
Not just a lot of light
With LED lighting, people often look at the number of lumens first. However, more lumens doesn’t automatically mean you have better visibility.
The beam pattern determines where the light ends up. A good headlight therefore ensures effective light distribution, so you can clearly see the road and surroundings.

Pay attention to ECE approval
Do you use the tractor or agricultural machine on public roads? Then check if the lighting is suitable for the application and has the correct ECE approval.
For agricultural and forestry tractors, requirements also apply to the placement, color, and operation of the lighting, among other things.

Does the lamp fit your machine?
Before choosing a new headlight, always check:
- Voltage: 12V, 24V, or both?
- Dimensions: does the lamp fit in the available space?
- Connection: does it connect to the existing wiring?
- Mounting: can the lamp be securely attached?
- Light functions: which functions do you need?
This prevents you from choosing a lamp that seems technically suitable but doesn’t fit your machine properly.
A heated lens for winter conditions
Do you regularly work in winter? Then a heated lens is definitely worth considering.
Snow and ice can build up on the lens and reduce the beam pattern. A heated lens helps keep the lens free of snow and ice at low temperatures.
This is especially useful for machines used outdoors or, for example, used for snow plowing.
Resistant to dust, water, and heavy use
Tractors and agricultural machines have to endure a lot. Dust, mud, rain, snow, and vibrations are part of the daily work.
Therefore, also pay attention to the IP rating of the lamp. This indicates how well the lamp is protected against dust and water.
A sturdy housing and good mounting are also important when the lighting is used intensively.

How to choose the right headlight

Strands Hi-Lo LED headlight
An LED headlight that fits this application well is the Strands HI-LO LED lamp.
This lamp works on 12V and 24V and has a lumen output of 5000 lumens. The HI-LO features ECE R148 and ECE R149 and is also equipped with ECE R10.
A major advantage is the automatic lens heating. When the temperature drops below 5 °C, the heating is switched on. This keeps the lens clearer of snow and ice during cold conditions.
The HI-LO also has an IP67, IP68, and IP69K rating, meaning the lamp is well protected against dust and water.
